WEBSITE RESEARCH #2: Elements for Musicians

CLASS NOTES
Package - The current music is what websites push
THE NEW ALBUM OUT NOW
Can be something slightly less commercial: "Clock here for Suede's newest lullabies"
Static Frame or Scrolling Frame?
You need an image behind the banner
Don't need to replicate what they've done, I find Suede banner boring.
Take some audience feedback for the different fonts.
Link into YouTube, Soundcloud, Twitter banners
If you use bright or black, you're limited own putting colour there

Worsed of all if you use lots of dark and bright, then you're very limited

DIGIPAK DESIGN SHOULD BE AN INFLUENCE ON WEBSITE, in terms of FONT + IMAGES

HYPERLINKS FOR:

  • Spotify
  • YouTube Channel
  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Instagram
  • iTunes

NOT ALWAYS BUT SOMETIMES TOO:

TOURS:
With the decrease in sale of physical albums, ticket revenue from touring is becoming more important.
(Article on new strategy Taylor Swift is pursuing with ticket sales, only wanting her primary audience), opinion piece saying it a scam)
The issue is how Swift’s fans can prove their devotion. They can preorder the CD of her forthcoming album, Reputation – and to receive it on the day of release costs $48.09 (That’s £37, but the CD itself costs $15, $13.99 for a digital download. And you are allowed to buy the album 13 times to boost your place in the line.) You can buy merchandise from her online shop. If you do not want to spend money, you can get a smaller boost to your position by repeatedly watching her new video, or by posting about her on social media.
Tours are mostly always done in support of an album, but there are cases of it being done for compilation albums, which is what my website will provide information on.

Here are some examples:

MERCHANDISE:
this advertising is a form of convergence with magazines, and also in competition with Amazon and eBay.
  • Clothes: T-Shirts, Jumpers, Trousers, (Socks, Underwear?)
  • Mugs
  • Posters
COMPETITIONS:
Fan takeovers, prosumer, convergence, web 2.0
  • Kraftklub video competition
  • Maroon 5 (they have a much more stronger tween audience, that's why the choice of musical.ly is fitting)

MY IDEA:
Everyone should find the most gritty, craziest, creepy place where they live, send us your own little video of a dystopian world. If I have time I will do one very short UGC vid to one of the Dog Man Star tracks, could find some places in Lux.
Brett and Bowie especially are people who would not want their fans to just shoot 0815 videos of live performances (no offence Kraftklub)

MORE UNCONVENTIONAL THINGS:
Press reviews. I saw this on the Sly Antics, just like with any other media they are all positive, even if there are some negative reviews.
Indie bands like Sly Antics need this, as they are not high in the charts, to convince potential audiences that they are high in quality and to give them a listen which in their ultimate dream scenario leads them to paying for tickets of tours and physical sales of CDs and Vinyls.
Suede don't really need to publish reviews, does it impress young audience nowadays?
